A Sudden Case of Christmas review by Bobby Blakey

Christmas movies are the kind of themes that can transcend every genre, but often are the family films that bring some sort of holiday cheer to the masses. The latest A Sudden Case Christmas features a great cast including Danny DeVito, Andie MacDowell, Wilmer Valderrama and Lucy DeVito, but does it have anything to offer to stand out from the usual holiday films we get all through the season or will it be able to bring people together?
A Sudden Case of Christmas follows an American couple taking their daughter Claire to her grandfather Lawrence’s grand hotel in Italy to tell her they're breaking up. Claire insists on celebrating Christmas in August to bring the family together, leading to unexpected complications. Claire’s other grandparents arrive to join the festivities, bringing secrets and adding further intricacy.
Anytime I get these sorts of movies I tend to try and keep an open mind because they are usual getting the straight to home release for a reason, especially the holiday ones. The networks are swarmed with them, but for good reason as there are big audiences that will eat them up. This film, while being entertaining enough, falls into that generic category and, being something, you might see on the Hallmark Channel only elevated by the great cast.
The story is simple and to the point but does something a little different with the holiday element being not during actual Christmas. It makes total sense to the story they are telling and helps to take the story in some fun direction. Through it all there are plenty of twists and turns through the family and their struggles that stick to a by the numbers format that we have seen a thousand times before but works for what they are trying to accomplish just fine.

I enjoyed the movie for what it is, but it isn’t offering much new to the genre, nor is it trying to. It is a simple family film that delivers exactly what it sets out to in a simple successful way. It isn’t going to become some holiday classic or anything, but if you are one into all the various holiday film offerings then this one is worth adding to your list of films to check out.
