Eddie Murphy has had an insane career from SNL funnyman, iconic stand-up specials and box office superstar. Back in 1984 he jumped onto the big screen with the action-comedy Beverly Hills Cop that spawned two sequels and ongoing talks about a fourth film coming soon. Now the film is finally heading to the small screen on Netflix with Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F starring Eddie Murphy, Kevin Bacon, Taylour Paige, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot from director Mark Molloy. Could this film bring more of what we love about Foley or will it not be worth returning to California?

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F follows Detective Axel Foley, back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter’s life is threatened, she and Foley team up with a new partner and old pals Billy Rosewood and John Taggart to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.

I love all the Beverly Hills Cop films, even the third one even though it admittedly its not that great. Honestly will all the back and forth and the failed TV pilot I figured this day would never get here and yet here we are. Can Murphy find his way back to Foley without using the trademark laugh while still making something fans will enjoy? The answer is yes all around. This new chapter not only towers above the previous entry, but also harkens back to the fun of the first two complete with some homage sequences and of course the classic cast.

Murphy easily jumps right back in as a more mature Foley, but one that still plays by his own rules and keeps the quick with and fun intact. The evolution of bringing in some family gives him new ground to traverse while heading down familiar territory. He looks to be having a blast in the role and doing press discussing it. He has been outspoken about his dislike for part three so hope this gives him that mental step up to feel like he can finally leave it behind.

These films aren’t looking for complicated plots, but one cohesive enough you care about and get the action and laughs you expect. Bringing back the original cast was great, and all used in a good way that not only pushes their own characters forward they never just feel like they are there for fan service. The film is filled with all the action and comedy fans are hoping for a great vehicle for Murphy to restart the franchise should they choose too.

I think the first two are still unmatched, but this entry is right up there in my opinion. The new characters bring some new fun to the series while allowing them to move on from some of the older characters and forge ahead with the action and fun of the future.
