Blazing Saddles 4K        review by Bobby Blakey

Mel Brooks has delivered some of the most hilarious films of all time including Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Silent Movie, The Producers and History of the World: Part I. Of them all his most iconic and hilarious film Blazing Saddles rode into theaters in 1974 starring Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little, Harvel Korman, Slim Pickens, Burton Gillam, Madeline Khan, and Mel Brooks himself. Now the hilarious comedy is getting the much-deserved 4K treatment in an all-new release.

Blazing Saddles follows a corrupt governor who grants a reprieve to an African American convict if the condemned man agrees to serve as sheriff of a small Western town, believing that new sheriff will only live long enough to serve the needs of the governor and his nefarious railroad-baron backer.

This film has been reviewed in every release for years and I’m not sure how much more can be said about it. The film is still one of if not the funniest film ever made and would absolutely not be made today making it an all the more important of a release. I love that Warner Bros still embraces its film instead of filing it away like so many others. Every time I revisit this movie, I still laugh out loud and love it as much as the first time I saw it. It’s rare a film can hold that level especially for this long.

Filled with ridiculous moments, over the top antics, racist tones and pure brilliance this film stands on a pedestal all its own as not only the perfect comedy, but social commentary that still holds true today. Some look at it as racist and offensive, but its really the opposite as it mocks the absurdity of these

beliefs and the bigots that behave this way. The out-of-pocket tone and random change of time period in the final act is so stupid its perfection.

I love this movie on every level, and it will always be in my comedy rotation. The new release looks fantastic in hi-def. It’s not the kind of film that really needs it, but still elevates it to look as perfect as the execution of the comedy itself. No one will ever come close to the genius of Brooks, and I hope this release gets it into the hands of a new generation to discover the genius of it all.

In addition to this classic comedy, this release offers up bonus content including commentary, additional scenes, featurettes and more. Grab your copy of Blazing Saddles when it hits 4K for the first time ever on November 19th from Warner Bros Discovery.
