Brothers
review by Bobby Blakey
There have been plenty of films using twins as a base to bring some great laughs and fun. The latest film Brothers brings a brilliant unlikely cast together including Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage, Brendan Fraser, Glenn Close, Taylour Paige, Marisa Tomei and the late M. Emmet Walsh with Palm Strings director Max Barbakow at the helm. Could this be yet another twin feature filled with laughs and fun or will it be a duo not worth committing crime with?

Brothers follows Two criminal twin brothers, one trying to reform, embark on a dangerous heist road trip. Facing legal troubles, gunfights, and family drama, they must reconcile their differences before their mission leads to self-destruction.

Getting this kind of cast together has the potential for something great, but also had been hearing mixed reviews for this one. While it does stick to some generic tropes of the genre, I still had a ton of fun with this one. The story is simple and hinges on the chemistry between Brolin and Dinklage which is dysfunctional and all around excellent.

I know the film didn’t get the best overall reviews, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t laugh out loud numerous times. Both Brolin and Dinklage are hilarious and feed off of each other perfectly, making you believe they could be brothers. They look to be having a great time in the chaotic fun of it all while bringing some heart to their relationship meshed into their unhealthy relationship.

I love seeing Fraser in a different kind of role once again and getting to flex his comedic chops while being over the top in the crazy department. He looks like he is having a good time as well and really chews up the scene every time he steps in to cause more trouble. In yet another surprising role is the iconic Glenn Close who
takes on yet another character that we are not used to from her. Much like her recent role in The Deliverance she shines in this new style, and I think she is finding some fun fresh new ways to showcase her already impressive skills like she always has.
The film is hit and miss at times with the jokes, but overall, it still worked for me giving me exactly the mindless fun I was hoping for. I can see it falling flat for some, but there is no doubt there are some funny bits here including one featuring an orangutang that is pretty hilarious.
