The Day The Earth Blew Up:
A Looney Tunes Movie
review by Bobby Blakey

The iconic Looney Tunes have been everywhere in TV, movies, comics, merchandise and everything in between since they debuted in 1930. Now they are headed to the big screen with the hand-drawn 2D animated adventure that marks the first fully animated feature-length film in Looney Tunes history, told on a scope and scale that’s truly out of this world. Could this return of the Looney Tunes be worth of their legacy or will their Earth not be worth saving?
The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie follows Porky Pig and Daffy Duck who venture to the big screen as unlikely heroes and Earth’s only hope when their antics at the local bubble gum factory uncover a secret alien mind control plot. Faced with cosmic odds, the two are determined to save their town (and the world!) ... that is if they don’t drive each other totally looney in the process.
I was excited to see some new Looney Tunes hitting the big screen especially in the traditional 2D animation as opposed to some new 3D style that everyone keeps shifting too. Add to the mix that the focus is on Porky and Daffy as the leads, and I was all in. The trailer looked like a great time, but also was concerned that it would find itself sticking to the by the number’s tropes of the regular cartoons and not offer much by the way of a big screen feature. It didn’t take long before I was proven wrong when the movie dove right into the thick of it all and lets you know it’s it goes all in.
The filmmakers pulled no punches and threw everything into this film in the best way possible to deliver the best thing the Looney Tunes brand has put out in years. The animation is perfect with a bright vibrant color palate that is a buffet to the senses, but it’s the story and characters that really bring it home. The alien invasion via gum is so silly its genius and works as well as you can imagine bringing enough insanity, hilarity and fun from beginning to end. They
deliver some epic moments while keeping us connected to the iconic characters trying to save us all.
They pulled out all the classic comedy cartoon bits while infusing the film with so many more. I loved every moment of this film and giving these two characters the lead was ingenious. They both have their own issues and insecurities which make for some fun moments and creative ways to get them to take on the threat to the planet. I really hope this film gets the attention it deserves because it is truly an animated masterpiece of fun and chaos that had me laughing and entertained the entire time.
The end credits were fun as well showing the art breakdowns, sketchs and character designs as well as a mid-credit scene that adds to the fun. I hope this isn’t the last time the Looney Tunes get to hit the big screen, but only time and the audience interest will tell.
Decide for yourself and get out there and check out The Day The Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie when it hits theaters on March 14, 2025 from Warner Bros and Ketchup Entertainment.
