Enter The Clones of Bruce
                          review by Bobby Blakey

As a life long martial artist and fan of the genre, like most grew up watching the films including the famed Kung-Fu theaters on the weekends. I loved all of them in all their insane and often silly glory but was always more intrigued with the films that were clearly trying to latch onto the Bruce Lee craze with performers billed with names such as Bruce Le, Bruce Li and Dragon Lee among a few. Now the new documentary Enter The Clones of Bruce breaks down the walls into the history of this insane time and how they came to be.

Enter the Clones of Bruce Lee follows Hong Kong movie studios who began to produce hundreds of unauthorized biopics, spin-offs and rip-offs starring a competing roster of Bruce Lee lookalikes within hours of his 1974 funeral. Over the next decade, ‘Bruceploitation’ would become a staple of global cinema. Through interviews with Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Bruce Liang and Dragon Lee; martial arts legends like Angela Mao, David Chiang, Phillip Ko and Sammo Hung; and the producers, directors, distributors and experts – along with copious clips from the films themselves –for the first time reveals the history, controversy and legacy behind one of the most bizarre genres in movie history.

There are very few that have never heard of martial arts icon Bruce Lee. The man wasn’t in the industry that long before his untimely death, but you cannot deny his impact on both the film industry and martial arts itself. For all the love and history, most, hardcore fans already know its this craziness of the replacement Bruce’s that baffled most. I was so excited to see this film and fill in even more gaps into the martial arts film history that I wondered about and was not disappointed.

It is crafted in the usual documentary style with nothing all that new on that front, but the subject matter itself steps things up. Filled with great interviews with those

that were there and the various Bruce’s themselves was an interesting watch, but the infusion of film clips, fight scenes, history and more makes it a must see of anyone that loves the genre like I do. Even if you know most of this history there is still that where are they now element that gives fans an update to what the are up to and been doing since their crazy run in films.

I loved this film and the trip back to my childhood martial arts film love that it took me on. It’s an interesting time in film and something that has never been done before or since to this degree in hoping to replicate the star power of one man. This entire film further cements the legacy of Bruce Lee, but also gives all these martial arts stars the spotlight that they deserve in their own right as well as opposed to just living in the shadow of the man they were poised to emulate.

Witness the return of the legend, sort of, with Enter The Clones of Bruce available now on digital and Blu-ray from Severin Films
