Frankie Freako
     review by Bobby Blakey

Director Steven Kostanski has offered up some insane films throughout his career including Manborg, Father’s Day, Leprechaun Returns and entries into both The ABCs of Death and V/H/S franchises. In 2020 he unleashed his great horror sci-fi comedy Psycho Goreman to great reviews and now he is back with an even more outlandish film in Frankie Freako. The film stars Connor Sweeney, Kristy Woodsworth, Matthew Kennedy voicing Frankie Freako, but does the film offer up the late-night insane fun it promises, or will it not be a number worth calling?

Frankie Freako follows uptight yuppie Conor who must battle the pint-sized forces of evil unleashed through his phone line, led by the maniacal rock n’ roll goblin Frankie Freako after calling a late-night party hotline that promises out-of-this-world fun.

Obviously if you see the poster or trailer you already know this movie is geared towards a very specific audience and I am one of them. The film feels like a mash-up of Puppet Master, Garbage Pail Kids, Boglins and Killer Klowns From Outer Space with a world all its own. It’s ridiculous, dumb, goofy, weird and all around a fun time. Kostanski knows what kind of film he is making and just goes for it and that is why it works on any level and one that keeps its unique vibe while being in familiar territory.

The story is simple and silly but ended up offering some world building to further the world of Frankie Freako into something massive. Filled with some fun effects, great puppet designs and goofy horrors it’s the kind of film that you want to see more of in all its absurdity. It has no business working, but it does and is funny and weird from

beginning to end even before the insanity with the effects, puppets and stop motion comes into play.

Everyone here knows what they are part of and just go for it and I for one appreciate it. We don’t get many films like this for a reason, but attention to detail and artistry is always welcome to me. I had a great time with this film and hope there is a chance we get to return to the bizarre, strange world of Frankie Freako and his chaotic friends and enemies.
