Hounds of War review by Bobby Blakey
Director Isaac Florentine has been bringing action to the fans for years working with some of the best action stars including Scott Adkins, Jean Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Michael Jai White and more. His latest film Hounds of War teams him up with Frank Grillo who is ready to bring the pain as well along with Robert Patrick and Rhona Mitra. Could this film bring the action fans are expecting, or will it fail to hit its target?
Hounds of War follows the best military mercenary’s money can buy known as ‘The Hounds’ who are sent on a final mission by their creator: a carefully planned trap set up to destroy them.
Florentine, being a martial artist himself and background in stunts his attention to detail in the action side of things is always fantastic. The films are not for everyone, but always hold their own in the action genre and there haven’t been too many that I didn’t love with his Ninja and Undisputed series being some of my favorites. On the flip side you have the addition of the always awesome Frank Grillo and that is a recipe that can bring everything the fans want to the forefront.
The story here is simple and nothing we haven’t seen before. It follows a formulaic direction and has just enough twists and turns to keep you interested, but it’s the action sequences that keep you invested until the very end. Grillo has done plenty of action pieces, but think he is sorely underappreciated in the genre and here gets the chance to flew even more of those muscles to fun results. He carries all the action to perfection and coupled with his natural swagger makes for the perfect action star for this film.
The addition of some great martial arts action guys like Mike Moller and Mark
Strange just adds to the greatness of the fight sequences that pull no punches and will no doubt entertain those hardcore fans of the genre. There are a couple of sequences that aren’t as exciting, but that happens in most films like this, but it goes all in more often than not to create a film that works now while bringing the old school action tones I love.
