Kinda Pregnant     review by Bobby Blakey

Love or hate here there is no doubt that comedian Amy Schumer has had a massive career in comedy, film and TV. For the last couple of years, she has been focused more on TV, but now she is back for her latest film Kind Pregnant co-starring Will Forte, Jillian Bell, Brianne Howey, Urzila Carlson, and Damon Wayans Jr. from The Wrong Sissy and The Out-Laws director Tyler Spindel. Could this film offer up the usual laughs or will it fail to give birth to a great comedy?

Kinda Pregnant follows Lainy whose plan to settle down and start a family falls apart, so she puts on a fake baby bump, tells a lie, and accidentally falls for her dream guy. It’s a simple premise that takes on the almost sitcom approach of hiding something, but in a way that manages to bring more heart and laughs than I had expected.

There isn’t anything here overly new about the storyline outside of it focusing on a fake pregnancy, but the format is standard. The reason the film works outside of that is thanks to the cast. Schumer goes all in per usual to not only bring some serious emotion to her situation while going all in on the self-deprecation and laughs.

She is great at taking on the average woman role and elevating it to something hilarious thanks to her willingness to do anything to make it work.

With just her the film would have likely worn thin quick, but the supporting cast shines across the board with Urzila Carlson stealing every scene she is in. The rest of the cast blends the more strait-laced tone with Jillian Bell surprisingly getting toned down. She is always great and typically the one getting the crazy laughs but seeing her get to play the calmer of the two was a good angle. Make no mistake, she is still funny here, just in a different way.

Schumer and Forte have strange, but good chemistry that makes for a believable and often cute romance. Their uncomfortable and funny banter makes for a fun couple and strengthens the bond they build under these circumstances. There are a lot of laughs, but also the by the numbers structure might fall flat for some. We all know where it is heading and likely how it is going to end since we have seen it a billion times, but the added craziness to the end makes up for it.
