Plankton the Movie
review by Bobby Blakey

For 25 years SpongeBob SquarePants has been dominating Nickelodeon as one of their most popular series. They have created not only a fun hilarious series, but it has become so much more than just the TV series with a product juggernaut and feature films. In 2024 the series debuted its first Netflix film shifting the focus on one of SpongeBob’s friends with Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. Now we are shifting focus to the villain of Bikini Bottom with the latest Netflix feature Plankton the Movie. Could this keep bringing the underwater fun fans love or should he have stayed inside the chum bucket?
Plankton the Movie follows Karen the Computer who decides to take over the world and it's up to Plankton to stop her - with a little help from SpongeBob and the Gal Pals (Pearl, Sandy, and Mrs. Puff).
I admit that I love all things SpongeBob. My daughter is a big fan and used to watch it with her all the time and became a fan. Anytime there is a new film then I am there and even more so with these new side character adventures. Plankton is one of my favorite characters so was no doubt excited to dive back into Bikini Bottom to see what kind of chaos he would be causing this time around.
This film is yet another hilarious entry into the fun franchise. This is not just another Plankton adventure, but they dive headfirst into the origins of Plankton himself which just makes it even more entertaining. Don’t worry, all the other characters make an appearance, and SpongeBob is worked into the main story arc, but this is Plankton’s story all the way. It is made all the better knowing that Mr. Lawrence, the longtime voice of the character also wrote the story for it and who better knows the character.

While I prefer the more traditional animation of the series and first film, this CGI style world is starting to grow on me. This time the main story is this now common animation style but also has a few segments in the 2D style that helped to give the film fun layers of storytelling. One of the things I love about the world of SpongeBob is that they stick to the old school, no rules approach to cartoons. Most of it makes no sense and that is the point and why it is so hilarious.
Filled with great animation, all the tropes and expected fun fans love from these characters and some catchy musical numbers this is yet another great time in Bikini Bottom. If you are fan of the franchise or just the character then check out Plankton the Movie streaming now on Netflix.
