     Tarot

Films focusing on ghosts and hauntings are usually not my cup of tea. Often they tend to just be repetitive and offer nothing new. There are obvious exceptions and when they nail it they kick some major butt and bring the scares tot eh audience. The latest, Tarot from writer/directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg stars Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Avantika Wolfgang, Novogratz, Humberly González, Larsen Thompson and Jacob Batalon. Could this be one that brings that special scare to the screen, or will it be a reading not worth getting?

Tarot follows a group of friends who recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings – never use someone else’s deck – and unknowingly unleashes an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death to escape the future foretold in their readings.

I never was fully sucked in with the trailers to this film so heading in I kept my expectations low. To no surprise it is a pretty by the numbers and cliched flick that never really lowers its guard to be what it could have been. That being said it also isn’t nearly as bad as I expected it to be and thanks to some cool visuals, well executed creature/ghosts it steps its game up to something that still manages to entertain.

The story is the typical trope of young people getting into something they shouldn’t be with the convenience of one of them knowing how to do tarot readings. This is one of those things they always do in films, so I don’t fault

them for doing it, but always having that character that happens to be into the thing that is going to kill them is always just an easy way to tell this story instead of getting creative. This film goes in just about every direction you expect, but I found it a lot more entertaining despite this than I thought.

It's far from perfect, but has some fun kills, great dark and creepy visuals that fully lean into the world of tarot and other things of this nature. The different types of environments and worlds created through the chaos are fun and I think it is one that will find its audience. It is better than a lot of these random horror flicks that get released, but also nothing overly special.
