The Last Stop In Yuma County                    review by Bobby Blakey

Well Go USA continues to be at the forefront of Asian cinema distribution, but that’s not all they are bringing to the table. Their latest release, The Last Stop In Yuma County stars Jim Cummings, Jocelin Donahue, Sierra McCormick, Nicholas Logan, Michael Abbott Jr., Connor Paolo, Alexandra Essoe, Robin Bartlett, Jon Proudstar, and Sam Huntington from writer/director Francis Galluppi. Could this film bring that something stands out to audiences, or will it fail to fill up the tank?

The Last Stop In Yuma County follows a traveling young knife salesman who is thrust into a high-stakes hostage situation by the arrival of two similarly stranded bank robbers with no qualms about using cruelty—or cold, hard steel—to protect their bloodstained, ill-begotten fortune while awaiting the next fuel truck at a middle-of-nowhere Arizona rest stop.

I knew nothing about this film going in other than Richard Brake being in it which was enough reason to check it out. The story and tone are reminiscent of something from Rodriguez or Tarantino with a Zombie’s Devil Rejects vibe. The story is simple and doesn’t really go anywhere that surprises, but still manages to stay interesting enough for most of the run time. The biggest issue for me is that as mentioned previously, it doesn’t really go anywhere.

I love films like this with characters at odds in strange circumstances and building tension. It offers up so many options to where it could go and how to bring twists and turns to the story. Here is does all that without ever offering up a fun twist other than one you are already told whether you remember it or not by the time it gets there.

It is far from perfect, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t still enjoy it for what it is. The build-up to the unexpected quick and violent stand-off, which is the best scene in the film, is great I just there had been more meat to the story. In the end it is a fine well-crafted flick that will no doubt find its fans but walks the line as something that could have been great with that little something extra.
